Critical Germaine Greer on the Death of the Crocodile Hunter
Remarks by feminist award-winning author Germaine Greer on Steve Irwin's work.
-"It’s no surprise that he came to grief."
-"We now have enough respect for lions to be embarrassed if we see someone trying to crack whips at them and wave chairs at them. Jumping all over crocodiles is the same kind of thing."
-"I’m not saying that’s not sad, I’m saying what might be over now is this kind of exploitation of animals."
-"I am sick and tired of programs that tell me that the world is full of wicked, nasty, powerful, deadly creatures. Why does Australia set itself up to be made into this hellhole?"
Let's see what you have to say when your dog gets eaten by an alligator in the backyard pond. Or whether or not you'd feel remorse if a neighbor put a bullet between the eyes of the animal. Or how about when your son goes to the beach and wonders how squishy that blue-ringed octopus is?
Steve Irwin devoted his life to animal conservaton. No doubt that he's is a bit back country in his behaviour, but he has much more to say than these supposed academic types.
